CYCLADES: Integrated monk seal conservation in Northern Cyclades

Description

“Supply, installation, configuration, training, and maintenance of an integrated surveillance system with electronic means of the marine area of the island of Gyaros, Cyclades” Within the framework of the European LIFE+ Nature program”

Project Scope

The project was implemented in the wider area of the island of Gyaros and is part of the broader LIFE Nature program with code LIFE12 NAT/GR/000688 and title: “CYCLADES: Integrated protection for the Mediterranean Seal in the Northern Cyclades” coordinated by WWF Greece and implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change, the Decentralized Administration of the Aegean, the Cyclades Development Company, Harokopio University, the Tethys Research Institute and the ΜOm/Society for the Study and Protection of the Mediterranean Seal. The purpose of the project is the surveillance of the area and the protection of the natural environment of the area with particular emphasis on the marine zone.

Specifically, within the framework of this program, CBS, WWF Greece, in close collaboration with MOm and external specialist partners, implemented a Conservation System, unique at the national level, for the protection of the NATURA 2000 marine area of the island.

The Surveillance System consists of:

  1. From a radar system, with the possibility of remote control. The radar was installed in Gyaros, in order to fully exploit the capabilities of the system. The radar is of navigational specifications and is used purely for maritime operations by citizens.
  2. The overall installation of the system consists of a high-definition camera, an AIS (Automatic Identification System) transceiver, a radar, an integrated system of transceivers transmitting data via microwave frequencies. It provides real-time and high-resolution coverage of the area around Gyaros for a radius of at least 8 nautical miles.
  3. All system data is managed by the operations center of the WWF Hellas field team located in Ermoupoli, Syros. More specifically, the system records and stores videos and photos, has automatic real-time notification of alarms in case of violation of the area, as well as the ability to store all data. Also all data is accessible to staff via the internet.
  4. From a thermal camera which has the ability to:
  • to locate the exact location of vessels or people at a distance greater than 4 nm. from its position.
  • to record high-resolution video of the activities of vessels and people that have been detected at a distance greater than 3.5 nm. from the camera position
  • to automatically turn to the target position, after the corresponding alert of the software, and follow it (“slew-to-cew”)
  1. From a microwave (MW) link of approximately 30km (LOS) which will carry the entire volume of data between Gyaros – Syros
  2. From a WiFi/WLAN communication link of 3km which will carry the entire volume of data between the M/W Link installation point in Syros and the WWF Hellas field team operations center (within Ermoupolis, near the Syros Port Authority)
  3. From all the necessary energy supply and power supply equipment (e.g. photovoltaic systems, wind turbines, battery arrays, H/P pairs, UPS, etc.) so that the Surveillance System, , works uninterruptedly (24/7) and without autonomy problems, taking into account that the island of Gyaros does not have any electrical/electrical installation and that it is difficult and rare to approach the installation point.
